About the Center

The Center for Livable Communities is based in the Department of Urban Design and Planning in the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington. The Center does applied research in support of environmental and economic sustainability, quality of life, and responsible democratic government in Washington state and beyond. The Center also works to develop new professionals in the fields of the built environment, providing linkages between the local professional community and the resources of the Department and College.

The Center is driven by values of environmental and social justice, and democratic participation in community development and resilience. It operates from the belief that the university should, in cooperation with state and local government and community members, seek to improve existing social and environmental conditions through applied research and innovative policy and program development.
